Justin Summerton
New Zealand b. 1968

Justin Summerton is a New Zealand surrealist painter who delights in depicting a dreamlike primeval New Zealand landscape.  Summerton shows a strong affinity with the New Zealand coastline and beaches. At a recent solo show of his paintings his technique was charmingly described as "scrumbling", a "brushstroke technique to build layers of colour and texture onto his surface. His brushstroke technique builds layers of colour and texture and tends to modify rather than obscure the previous layer and creates stark contrast between dark and light pigments. The overall result is a fresh and vibrant new view of the New Zealand landscape." Summerton has been a full-time professional artist for fifteen years and has exhibited in Australia and in the US as well as at New Zealand's leading galleries
